Emma Elizabeth Koppelman (b. October 5, 1885, Baltimore Co., Maryland; d. February 17,1961[1]) 25 June 1906 at Jerusalem Ev. Luth. Church, Gardenville, m. Walter R. Hedeman  (b. June 1878, Baltimore, Maryland; d.1974). They are buried in Parkwood Cemetery, Parkville, MD. The Hedemans and the Koppelmans came from neighboring villages in Germany: Grothe and Badbergen. The 1900 census lists Walter as a farm laborer boarding in the household of Henry and Herman Radecke, close to the Koppelman farm. Walter came from a more educated, urban background than Emma.

According to Hedeman family lore, says Jody Hedeman Couser, "Walter Rider Hedeman first saw Emma Elizabeth Koppelman at a Catechism Class public final test at the Old Jersusalem Lutheran Church and told his companion, 'I want to meet that girl, she's very smart.' "

By 1910, he was working as a draftsman in a railroad office[2]; in 1920, he had become a mechanical engineer.[3] Among their neighbors on Echodale Avenue in the city of Baltimore were Macy and Elizabeth Koppelman and their sister Margaret Koppelman Gleitsman: women who either worked at city jobs or, in MargaretŐs case, had married a successful furniture dealer. Emma and Walter Hedeman had four children, William, Ruth, Walter, and John, all of whom either earned college degrees or pursued professions like engineering, medicine, and law:

HedemanŐs occupation as apprentice in the same engineering office as his father. Mary and William HedemanŐs children were Robert and William:
